Saving Android Apps Data Using App2SD APP for Android

There are two lightweight techniques for saving simple application data for Android applications. Shared Preferences and a pair of event handlers used for saving Activity instance details. Both mechanisms use a name/value pair (NVP) mechanism to store simple primitive values.

Using SharedPreferences, you can create named maps of key/value pairs within your application
that can be shared between application components running in the same Context.
Shared Preferences support the primitive types Boolean, string, float, long, and integer, making them
an ideal way to quickly store default values, class instance variables, the current UI state, and user
preferences. They are most commonly used to persist data across user sessions and to share settings
between application components.

Alternatively, Activities offer the on Save Instance State handler. It’s designed specifi cally to persist
the UI state when the Activity becomes eligible for termination by a resource-hungry run time.

The handler works like the Shared Preference mechanism. It offers a Bundle parameter that represents a key/value map of primitive types that can be used to save the Activity’s instance values.

This Bundle is then made available as a parameter passed in to the onCreate and onRestoreInstanceState method handlers.

This UI state Bundle is used to record the values needed for an Activity to provide an identical UI following unexpected restarts.

Using iTunes to Manage Music on Android

On of the biggest complaints heard from Android users is that there is no way to manage their music as simply as they can with an iPhone and iTunes. Unfortunately, Android does not currently have a desktop music service (expect a cloud-based option in the near future from Google) besides the computers file browser. There are several programs that offer to be an "iTunes replacement" for Android, however, some users just love iTunes and want to continue using it. This article will show you how to use iTunes to manage the music on your Android device. However, there are some things you will need to be aware of:

  • You will still need to occasionally use Windows Explorer or your computers file browser to view the files on your device
  • You will not be able to purchase songs in iTunes and expect them to play on Android
  • This is a work-around and requires a bit more work that the seamless iTunes to iPod syncing
  • You cannot have other songs in iTunes that you dont have on your Android device already
  • You will only be able to access the songs in iTunes when your phone is plugged in
  • This method takes a bit more work and remembering to copy new files when you purchase them

I will explain the reasons for these restrictions as we go along. So lets begin.

Organizing With Folders in Windows

Before we can begin with iTunes, you must first organize all of your music using Windows Explorer (or your file manager on Mac). Open the folders that you store music in and look around. You are going to have one main folder called "Music." In that, you will have the following sub-folders: "Music for Android" and "Other Music." In the "Music for Android" folder, you will be putting all of the songs you want to have on your Android phone. In the other folder, you will put all of the songs that are in your collection but that you dont want on your phone. You can cut and paste songs between the two folders freely.

Connecting Your Phone

Once you establish which music files you want on your phone, you are going to copy them onto your phone. To do this, plug your phone into the computer with the USB cable and select "Mount as USB storage" on your phone. You will now notice that your phone has become a removable storage device. Open it up in your file manager and locate the folder called "music." If one doesnt exist, you can create it. (Note: this guide is written as if you dont already have music on your phone. If you do, you can copy it all to the "Music for Android" folder on your computer.) Into this folder you are going to paste all the music from the "Music for Android" folder on your computer. It sounds complicated, but its not that bad.

Once all of your music is copied to your phone, you will now have two copies of the music: one stored on your computer, the other on your phone. When you download a new song from Amazon or online, you will need to save it to your phone AND the folder on your computer. Essentially, you want to make sure they remain exact copies of one another.

Setting up iTunes

Now that you have music on your phone, you are going to tell iTunes that you want it to manage your library of music on your phone as if it were your desktop. If you already have music in iTunes, you will need to remove it from your library for this to work (I warned you in the intro). This doesnt delete the music from your computer, rather it simply gives iTunes a fresh start.

Now, make sure your phone is connected and mounted as removable storage. In iTunes, click "File" > "Add File to Library..."

In the window that appears, locate your phones music folder that you copied the music into earlier. Select all of the files by clicking the first one, holding Shift, and clicking the last one. Then, click "Open."

Once your music finishes importing, iTunes will display all of the music on your device. Your iTunes Library will only be accessibly when your phone is plugged in and mounted because iTunes is reading the files from your device. Whenever you edit a file in iTunes, the changes will be reflected on your device because it is treating them as raw mp3 (or other) music files. There is, however, one exception: album artwork.

Album Artwork, iTunes, and Android

For whatever reason, iTunes doesnt like to handle album art work very well. It will download album art work and reflect it within iTunes, but if you unplug your phone and open the Music app, you will not see that artwork. If art work is a big issue for you, you may not want to use this solution because it is time consuming. However, it is simple, assuming you remember to do it each time you download a file (Note: if you download music from Amazon or another online music store, the album art work is usually encoded in the file and it isnt necessary to encode it using iTunes.) To add album art work, right click on a music file in iTunes and select "Get Album Artwork." Then, right click on it again, and choose "Get Info." Click on the "Artwork" tab.

Now here is the tricky / weird part. When iTunes downloads album art work, it doesnt store that art work in the file like Amazon does when it sells a song to you. Instead, it is only accessible when you are viewing the song in iTunes. In order to actually make the album art work encoded within the file and viewable on Android and other music players (like Windows Media Player), you must paste the file into the Artwork tab. This can be done by right clicking on the Album art that iTunes finds and selecting "Cut" and then right click in the blank space and choose "Paste."

Although it doesnt look any different now, the art work is now encoded into the file. You will need to repeat this for every song. Time consuming? Yes. But its the price to pay if you want accurate album art using iTunes on Android.

Things to Remember

The good news is that you have completed all the difficult steps. The only thing to do now is to remember a few things:

  • When you download a music file on your computer that you want on your Android phone, save one copy in "Music for Android" and then copy another copy onto your phone when it is mounted.
  • When you download a music file on your phone from an app like Amazons music market, remember to copy and paste it into your computers "Music for Android" folder
  • If you change a file on your phone using iTunes, copy it into your "Music for Android" folder and remember to OVERWRITE the old file with the new.
  • You cant make changes to your iTunes library unless your phone is plugged in and mounted
  • Dont download music from iTunes. You must use Amazon or some other DRM-free service.

Space Keeper Android Game Review

Set in the distant future against the backdrop of drifting galaxies and luminous planets, your job is to move a variety of renewable energy cells into brightly coloured wormholes where they are sent to Earth to be used as an energy source. With the clock ticking, you aim to move as many as possible, avoiding obstacles and floating asteroids along the way and gaining bonus points for trickier manoeuvres.

At first glance, you may think: how thrilling could sweeping things into a hole possibly be? Is this just some kind of franticmini-golf set in space? Happily, Space Keeper’s seemingly one-dimensional gameplay style is deceptive.

The early levels subtly introduce different ways of scoring more points, such as joining cells into a lattice or bouncing them off multipliers but it is key to note that none of these techniques are mandatory. You could pass through all the levels in under an hour by doing little more than simply dragging the cells into the wormholes and if so, you would not notice much of a change in difficulty throughout. One of the main strengths of the game is that you are able to determine your own style of playing that is equally valid to any other. If you wish to chill out, then you can play at a slow, relaxed and uncomplicated pace, wallowing in the swirling colours and serene ambient soundtrack. Stubborn completionist? Then the game will put your timing, precision and co-ordination (You may need both hands!) to the test.

Space Keeper uses the familiar three-star point system, providing a genuine challenge if you want to grab all three stars in a level. Since doing this often allows little room for error, you will need to develop a strategy for each level, especially towards the latter stages.  For example, you may choose to neglect joining cells together to make use of the multipliers or maybe manoeuvre cells with one hand while fending off asteroids with the other. It is this need for creativity that keeps the game fresh and makes success very satisfying. Even when you fail, it rarely feels as if the game has been unfair. Any frustration will be directed at yourself, for perhaps missing a shot or getting your tactics wrong.

With such a compelling gameplay infrastructure, it then seems a shame that it ends rather quickly. Sure, it may take some time to get every star, but there is clearly potential for more ideas and levels to be added on. On the other hand, it may be for the best that the game does not risk getting stale and leaves us wanting more.
Labelling Space Keeper as “just sweeping” is like calling Temple Run “just swiping”. Praise must be given to the developers for creating a product that is simple and attractive yet rewarding. This is a game that gives back to you the amount that you put into it.

Sundar Pichai to bring next version of Android OS at Google I O

Google I/O or the companys Annual Developers Conference is at our doorstep, on 25th and 26th of June, where about 6,000 developers and media officials will be flooding their way to San Francisco, California, United States.

The main man on the shows floor is Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President of Android, Chrome and Apps, at Google. We really dont know who to take this news at the moment, as Google has always kept a habit of announcing the latest editions of their mobile operating system, often in fall, somewhere in October or November, as seen from the previous years. The source reports, exactly claims that, Sundar Pichai has started preparing for Google I/O, earlier this month, where Google actually plans these events at the last minute. In this regard, Pichai had to make different decisions on the companys projects those are ready to be showed off to the community. And they also writes that, he will be previewing the next release of Android operating system, that is rumored to be named as Lollipop or Lemonhead, at the Google I/O event, rather than keeping it cook until this years fall. As this statement seems to be hinting, "I want the world to understand what we are doing sooner."

"Device makers complained this was too late to prepare for the holidays and put them at a disadvantage to the one company selected each year to develop the Nexus phone in conjunction with Google."

Other than just about Android itself, Sundar Pichai is expected to talk some words about their new Android Wear, a wearable system software based on Android, alongside he will also be announcing new manufacturing partners, that will build products using Android Wear platform.

Incoming Android 4 4 3 with HTC Sense 6 1 for the HTC One M8

HTC has been working hard to keep the HTC One M8 at the cutting edge. These days, one of the crucial strategy element in the war between smartphones companies is to keep their top devices bundled with the latest Android OS.

Android 4.4.3 was released a short while ago but HTC has already merged the newest 4.4.3 source code with their Sense UI framework. The incoming update will probably bring improved HTC Sense version, however the current practice shows that HTC doesnt like to bump their Sense version to anything but .5 a or full number (Sense 5 ---> Sense 5.5 ---> Sense 6) so the official Sense version might remain 6.0 even if some parts of the code will mention HTC Sense 6.1. Also, the new official HTC BlinkFeed (com.htc.launcher) version 6.1.779245 is already available on the Google Play. So what are some the incoming changes?
  • ro.build.id=KTU84L
  • ro.build.version.release=4.4.3
  • ro.com.google.gmsversion=4.4.3_r1
  • HTC SDK API: 6.25 (current latest M8 software is based on SDK 6.17) ---> this might indicate improved HTC Sense version
  • Improved camera drivers
  • Gamepad buttons code
  • HTC Files manager
  • Improved audio drivers
  • Android fstab for enabling zRAM on 2GB device
  • Improved thermal configuration
There are also some changes in the code that indicates the possibility to answer the phone with the power button or support for "notification_flash_led_8color" which means that HTC One M8 led might blink in 8 different colours or it could be reserved for the HTC Desire series only.
